In January of 1977 the Library Board of Trustees nominated Ann Smoot for the American Library Trustee Association Honor Award for her gift of the library and endowment fund. In June of 1977 the board was notified that Mrs. Smoot was named as recipient of a 1977 Honor Award.
Mrs. Ann Hopewell Smoot was the recipient of the first annual Honor Award for Major Benefactors from the American Library Trustees Association in recognition of her outstanding gift of a public library to the county of King George, Virginia. Her gift to the county was the library building and grounds along with a $700,000 endowment fund that was presented to the county on November 1, 1973. A reception was held on November 12, 1977 at 2:00 p.m. for the award to be formally presented to her and the portrait of Mrs. Smoot was hung next to that of her husband in the library memorial room. There was over 200 people in attendance when Mr. Daniel Casey, Chairman of the Awards Committee presented the award to Mrs. Smoot.
A duplicate plaque was presented to the Smoot Library and accepted on behalf of the Board of Trustees by Mr. Wesley Meyers, Vice Chairman of the Smoot Library Board.
This national honor is given to one major benefactor of libraries each year beginning with the one Mrs. Smoot received. The significance of the gift will be measured from the point of the library receiving the gift and not the size alone. Considerable weight is given to innovation and imagination of the part of the donor.
