JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION:  LIBRARY DIRECTOR

LOCATION:  L.E. Smoot Memorial Library, King George, VA

DESCRIPTION:  The L.E. Smoot Memorial Library is seeking a library director with proven public library management skills.  The Smoot Library’s next director must be a dynamic, forward-thinking professional who, in addition to managing overall library operations, will work closely with an active ten-member Board of Trustees.  An ideal candidate will have experience in planning, recommending and implementing library policy, budgeting, managing the library collection, being a strong library advocate within the community, public relations, grant writing and fundraising.  Other responsibilities will include managing a staff of 8 FTEs, creating imaginative programs for patrons of all ages, and maintaining effective partnerships with public officials, civic, library and community groups including the Friends of the Library.

Located in King George County, “Gateway to the Historic Northern Neck,” Smoot Library serves over 22,500 citizens in an area of approximately 180 square miles.  King George’s location as part of the Fredericksburg region and between the Washington, D.C./Richmond metropolitan areas and the serenity of the scenic Northern Neck offers a unique perspective of a changing Virginia.  King George serves as home to one of the world’s premier research and development centers, the Naval Surface Warfare Center – Dahlgren Division, one of the region’s largest employers.  Nestled between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers, King George is a transitioning rural County steeped in history that places a high priority on quality of life through the protection of natural, cultural and historical resources as well as by being a regional leader in pro-active and progressive planning, development and services.

REQUIREMENTS:  Minimum qualifications for the position include a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library science program and five years of responsible library work experience with supervisory responsibilities.  A successful candidate must have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills that inspire, motivate and engage the community, Board, staff, elected officials and potential donors in developing and implementing a shared vision for enhanced library service.  Essential attributes include extensive public library knowledge, thorough understanding of library technology, political acumen, being highly motivated and self-directed with a proactive "think-outside-the-box" attitude, and the ability to provide leadership for an anticipated building expansion project.

SALARY: Salary range: $55,000 - $75,000 with a competitive benefits package
